Susy Oludele, also known as Susy “the Purple Unicorn” or “the African Creature”, is a prime example of what happens when grade A hustle and affirmation pay off. The Bronx-born, first generation Nigerian-American is equal parts hair stylist and motivational speaker. As the owner of Brooklyn salon Hair by Susy, she boasts a host of services from box braids, crochet braids and cornrows, to faux locs, goddess locs and marley twists, with the celebrity clientele to match.

Susy’s confidence, and overall good energy, is contagious. “If you're coming in to do box braids, it's not just gonna be any box braids. It's gonna be box braids that fit you. It's gonna be box braids for you,” she told OkayAfrica writer Damola Durosomo last year. “It's gonna be the best box braids you've ever had 'cause my energy, what I'm putting into your hair, I'm speaking life into what you're doing.” That bond has gotten the likes of Solange, Beyoncé, Zoe Kravitz and LaLa Anthony in her chair. But more than making her clients stand out, Susy aims to challenge current beauty standards and normalize African hairstyles through her work. “I always want to create my own idea of normal...Let's glorify our beautiful hairstyles and wear them with pride,” she tells Other than her talent, what truly stands out about Susy is her positive attitude. When asked for advice she’d like to share with other entrepreneurs on the rise, she offers encouraging words. “Just know yourself, your intuition, and speak what you want into existence. Speak life on yourself, speak life around yourself, speak life into others, create inspiration for yourself. This is all work you have to do for yourself.”
