Massah David & Miatta David Johnson

Miatta David Johnson and Massah David are the Liberian sisters known for throwing some of the biggest parties in Hollywood. With clients like Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, 20th Century Fox and Rihanna, their event marketing and creative agency, MVD. Inc. creates unique experiences that are sought after in the entertainment and music industry.

Here they tell us about what inspires them and how their past as child refugees serves as a story of resilience and inspiration for other young entrepreneurial African immigrants.

What were you doing before you founded MVD?

Miatta: I was a financial reporter and found that my passion was in entertainment. So after a couple of years, I quit my job and decided to open my own firm.

Massah: I was moonlighting on creative for our MVD projects while I worked at a record label and decided to leave the label and focus all of my efforts on our company.

With so many experiential events to create, where do you draw inspiration from?

Miatta: Traveling inspires me. My tribe, my peers are my mentors.

Massah: The fashion industry inspires me. They tend to think outside of the box when it comes to their fashion shows and find creative ways to tell the story behind various clothing lines every season. A select group of women who happen to be my peers and friends also serve as my mentors.

What would you tell your younger self?

Miatta: Everything that you are searching for is within you. You are enough and you have everything you need to succeed in this life.

Massah: Trust yourself over anyone else.

How do you think the work of MVD or your personal stories have influenced youth culture?

Miatta: I can only hope it shows the youth culture that African creatives can be a part of the global narrative.
