Congolese photographer Ley Uwera’s Instagram has 65,000 followers and is growing daily. Her fans come for her riveting take on life in eastern Congo, a region often covered by the western press with a stereotypical lens. What they find in her feed is a rich assortment of photos of Congolese people and landscapes. From incredible street fashion to workers, soldiers, nuns and fishermen she creates a complex picture of the region.

“I love to work in Africa. It’s about changing people’s perception of poverty in DR CONGO and unveiling aspects of daily life here and some of the country’s most beautiful natural scenery,” she tells OkayAfrica. “The thing that bring me joy in my work is when I meet new people on the ground and share their stories. Some good, or bad. But always necessary for youth on and off the continent to get a full and accurate look at DR Congo. Youth can dream, have good initiatives and do something positive. I believe they can see all this through my work.”
